Character and Charm in Alexandria's Garden District

Character and Charm in Alexandria's Garden District

Alexandria's Garden District was originally established in 1905, with new construction continuing every few years since the 1950s. Located about five minutes from downtown and the banks of the Red River, the Garden District reflects diverse architecture, including bungalow, wood frame, colonial, Georgian and some contemporary styles. Houses often feature front porches, high ceilings and wood floors, with many having been updated to include upscale amenities. Throughout the neighborhood, sidewalks, mature trees and established landscaping prevail. Recent sold listings averaged $340,000 for a size of roughly 3,600 square feet.

·

Parks/Outdoor

Garden District residents can enjoy walking and jogging along the neighborhood's shady streets. The area is located minutes from City Park, where oak-lined Big Island Field draws residents for informal football, soccer, rugby and ultimate Frisbee matches. City Park is adjacent to the well-regarded Alexandria Zoo, a three-hole municipal golf course and the Hyson Bayou walking trail. The Garden District is less than 10 minutes from downtown boat landings for the Red River, a popular waterway for fishing and water skiing.

·       Shopping

The Garden District is about 10 minutes from local and national stores, restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies and other services in the MacArthur Drive retail district. Five minutes from the neighborhood are the locally owned boutiques, jewelers, cafes and clothing stores lining Jackson Street. The Garden District is also minutes from downtown, which features retail art and a growing number of locally-owned eateries.
